Emeryville Residence

This Emeryville Residence (under construction), located in an architecturally-eclectic neighborhood in the East Bay, demonstrates a dramatic display of shadow and light.  A delicate cantilevered chain-link trellis (soon to be installed)  that span the exterior of the fiber-reinforced cement panel clad building, offer sheltered outdoor spaces and create an ever-changing pattern of shade and greenery.

The 2 bedroom/2.5 bath house was designed for a single mom and her young son.

Detail of 10mm fiber-reinforced cement panels on the front elevation.  Fasteners are exposed stainless steel screws.

The panel installation on the side is complete.  The aluminum roll-flashing is visible between the panels

The construction photo above depicts the necessity of drawing light into the house through the stairwell, due to the narrow lot size.

The photographs above show  views through the side yard demonstrating the balloon-framing member hierarchy and (above left) the wood framed street elevation.

This perspective shows the relationship between the building skin and its interior spaces. Note the subtle shading device balanced on the exterior and the juxtaposition between the first and second floor.

The axonometric models above illustrate the delicate relationship between building and trellis and exemplify the series of skylights that light the core of the residence.
