Lower Sproul Plaza Terrace Improvements

University of California, Berkeley Campus

In an effort to draw student-life back to lower Sproul Plaza, the ASUC asked for a concept for the terrace on the east side of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Union building, UC Berkeley, California. (see above computer-generated rendering above).  The south-facing terrace overlooks Lower Sproul plaza and Zellerbach Auditorium.

The inverted "tulip" umbrellas (which recall a similar design in the student dining hall on the north side of the plaza by Vernon DeMars, now known as the Cesar Chavez student center) create a "forest" under which outdoor seating and dining will take place.  At night, the umbrellas will glow from within, creating a pleasant view for those leaving Zellerbach Auditorium across the way.

The Round elements are food and service related.  The square elements are "Tulip" umbrella structures, permanently affixed.  The small round tent is a "WiFi" center.  The large round structure is in schematic form only and is envisioned to be a smart-looking tension-structure cantilevered from a steel central pylon.

Students can relax in outdoor chairs and tables which can be moved anywhere on the terrace to suit any social rhyme or reason.  In the event of a noon-time outdoor concert at the plaza, the terrace will become the "box-seats" for the event!
