University of California Bear's Lair Brew Pub

Berkeley, California

Work entailed a complete remodeling of the 40 year old campus student brew pub located on the ground floor of the concrete CAL ASUC  Student Union Building, designed by Vernon DeMars.  Years of remodelings had covered the old concrete wall finishes throughout.

New and old materials overlap each other.   The banquettes overlap the rough board-formed concrete interior wall.  The banquettes themselves jog up and down while the concrete moves  in and out.

New sliding glass doors allow patrons to spill out onto Sproul Plaza on warm days.

Detail of banquette; dark-stained oak paneling with maple seat.  The restoration included the rediscovery of the randomly placed windows.

The Class of 1910 Fireplace was discovered and restored. Additional banquettes were added to each side.  Decorative lighting mounted behind the banquettes illuminate the stonework.

The perforated metal canopy echoes the shape of the bar below.  Low voltage decorative light  sit on the rim of the canopy.
